Singlespeed Project

Surprised that there's not enough adjustment in those dropouts - you only need 10mm, or less if you're willing to use a half-link.

I found that by grinding down the outer part of the chainring bolts worked well - screw them on to a suitable bolt in order to hold them providing you have access to a grinding wheel of course - i :) Instead of buying a spacer kit you can canabalise any old cassettes and use the spacers provided by Mr Shimano!

Cheers and good luck, if you get the gearing right single speeds are great fun and will get you fit!!

I have already bought a spacer kit and dx 16t spocket (v.good service from londonfixie) and have been recommended a tensioner from mr control (same as on-one doofer) so now just need to sort the front chainring - do I need a retro crank extractor or will a current one do the job? Whats best value?

I love the ghetto idea - brilliant!!

Cheers

Project finished, ok its got a biopace front ring but it doesn't seem to make a difference - it's a great ride!

Nice one: there's no doubt that even with a tensioner SSs look clean and lithe.

Keep the biopace ring - its the signature detail (and if I remember the marketing rightly, biopace not only allows you to put in more of those oh-so-important power strokes, it can let you ride effortlessly up near verticle flights of stairs ...)
