get a donor frame that needs a home, if the specialized engineers thought it would be better with just one gear ... well they would have built it with only one f%*king gear :shock:

True though, it looks like somewhere around 89 or so. And to think its in very good condition, its lasted all this time being looked after and kept fairly original and now you want to do this to it :? Whats the world coming to :roll:
No seriously I wouldnt say anything about singlespeeders (mainly cause they're all mad and they would come and get me)
All jockularity aside good luck with the project and let us see it when its finished, the relaxed geometry should make it a great singlespeed commuter.
I am off to bed and I should try not to post after a few Magners.

But in all seriousness it seems a shame to rip apart a nice original bike like that, I mean the good people of this Forum spend ages trying to source the original parts for their xyz projects.......
your next post should be a picture of a bare unloved neglected frame with no original period parts fitted to it and the question 'should I single speed it?' to which I guarantee you'll get a unanimous YES response

That was my first proper mtn bike with a range of gears (1st was a 5 speed Raleigh Maverick).
Year wise this was 87/88 (with a vague memory of my own life?!?!) If it helps this was the first yea that shimano hyperglide was introduced so there may be a guide to a more accurate time!?!?!
This looks very original apart from the tyres (spec crossroads) and it seems one of the mtn lx shifters is missing.
Even things such as the seat, pedals and grips look original.
Get it ready to ride with gears and get yourself an old klein with horizontal dropouts for a singlespeed. they seem to be going very cheap these days (lots of sarcasm!).
I look forward to seeing it sorted.
