Hi All,

I’ve now bent two of the cheaper pressed single speed cogs and am having to run a full cassette at the moment as it’s the only way I can run the bike!

Can I use a standard cassette cog spaced out? I noticed that they are considerably wider at the base than the pressed cogs and having noticed my new freewheel scored (!) from using a pressed cog I cant see this as a bad thing……….

Any comments?

I know I should probably just buy a Surly cog or something but am very penniless this month!!!

Cheers folk,

M

... and again.

My main use cog is a Shimano DX and another one I have used was a Gusset - not sure if either is pressed but both are 18t and have been no problem. My hub body is a steel Hope so I'm sure I'm not damaging it.

My Fixie cog is an on-one alloy and seems to be lasting well which is a surprise.

I've got a Shimano DX BMX sprocket and a Uniglide cassette sprocket here on my desk, and the BMX sprocket (cheap, stamped) is thicker: 2.2mm vs 1.8mm. Cassette sprockets are only thicker at the base if they have a spacer built in, and that's generally only true of the smaller ones. (11, 12, 13t).

I don't know what's making your sprockets bend, but how's your chainline? There shouldn't be much side load on a singlespeed sprocket.

A work-around might be to use one of the spacer kits that has a pair of conical spacers to support the sprocket. Having said that, I'm heavy and fairly strong, and I've never bent a sprocket.

Problem with the two piece spacers is they don't allow a decent dialling in of chainline.

[whispers - see my homepage for some nice SS stuff... ]

Less bend maybe - more splay appart

Chainline is fine etc.

Used a similar cog on a 48 x 16 road bike and that was fine - maybe I have a duff?

Cheers for that.

The DX cog you have on there - are they pretty good? Are they better made than the generic ones supplied by DMR, Gusset etc (not a trick question honest!)

How quick can you despatch?

Pm'd you.

The DX cogs are probably the best of the cheaper cogs and have a decent hardened chrome finish. Definitely superior to the really cheap stamped ones supplied in the typical SS kits but obviously they are not as nice as the machined Surly cogs etc...
