Single speeders

Cheers for the replies so far folks. I'm trying to run the perfect chain length and a 34(Ring I'm going to use) works perfect with a 19. Which seems a little low. A 17 also comes in pretty close, which is what I'll probably end up going for. I'm gonna compile a gear inch table from postings so far to see the spread folks are using.

you can buy a half-link from charliethebikemonger on ebay if it helps with chain length.

a bit of a ghetto solution I have found is use half of a newish chain and half of an older chain which is more worn and you might find when fitted together they make the perfect length better than the newish one on its own.

You sir..... are despicable, I'm a quality engineer don't you know

The 34X17 will necessitate the use of a half link chain/link anyroads. Can't decide whether to go for a full chain or not.

I opted for a tensioner over half link because i believed that in a short time again wear/stretch would lead to it becoming slack anyway.
32:16 btw, thinking me moving to a 34 though.

Here is a really bad pic of my home made tensioner - it lasted 3 years until the frame cracked...

and I got this done by my local framebuilder...

Don't get hung up on the ratio - build the bike with anything you have and ride it. If you like it do it better, if you don't... you haven't lost much.

Off road I'm a wimp going for 26:16 on 26" wheels and 24:16 on 28" wheels. Ride style requires lots of spinning, carry speed through as much as possible and try to ease off on braking.

I ride Glentress mainly and at the Single Speed champs at Drumlanrig where terrain is usually either up or down with little level and at Drumlanrig level was very soft with poor traction. Going up I could stay on the bike and downhill freewheeling was pretty sensible and fast enough.

On road 42:16-18 is the norm with slick high psi tyres.

Tensioning has been tried by every means, my favourite being my eccentric rear hub and recently 'Ghost' gear.

Cheers

36 x 17 does it for me. In a manner of speaking!

Cheers,Al :D

The results in full

40": 26/16=42.2
50": 34/17=51.9, 32/16=51.9(X2), 39/19=53.?, 44/21=54.4, 36/17=54.4, 42/20=54.5, 34/16=55.1
60"
70": 44/16=71.3, 38/13=75.8
80": 46/14=85.2

So to conclude 50"-55" seems the most popular and there are some weirdo's about  I shall be contacting the popular scientific journals to publish my findings and conclusions.
