iam setting up a single speed and i have just put on a shimano IG 51 8 speed chain on to a 16 tooth cog and it wont bed in.

the chain line is good and straight.

is there different spacings on the teeth of cogs? is so and i need to get a 3/32" bmx chain will it work on a mtb front chainring?

thanks in advance.

What's the cog? You haven't got a 1/8" freewheel have you?

All modern bike chain is 1/2" pitch, so that's not the problem.

it is a twenty 4 seven 16 tooth, it doesn't have any reference to pitch or size.

i also have a surley 22 tooth x 3/32" that seems ok on the chain.

44/22 might be the solution.

It must be a 1/8" sprocket. In principle you're supposed to match the width of the chainring, chain, and sprocket, but a 1/8" chain (as rc300 suggested) works fine with any (1/8" or 3/32") chainring and sprocket. As you found out, a 3/32" chain (8-speed derailleur chain is nominally 3/32") won't mesh with 1/8" sprockets (or chainrings).
