SINGLE SPEED...........HOW TO CONVERT?

think i have been tempted (finaly) to give this a go after much scepticism

any help with this would be great as its all new to me

You will need cassette spacers (once you remove the cassette) unless of course you change the rear wheel totally and unless you get real lucky with the font and rear ring combo, a chain tensioner will be required to stop the chain from slipping.

1. Remove cassette (keep for if you hate SS)
2. Fit cheap SS spacers and cog.
3. Fit cheap tensioner (or do something wierd with your rear mech to do the same job).
4. Remove 2 chainrings.
5. Shorten chain to fit.
6. Try it - if you like it, spend a fortune on expensive Ti cog, SS chainset, tensioner etc. If you hate it, reverse the process and Ebay your SS bits.

It is entirely true!

A single speed is only a single speed if you use just the single gear!

The removal or replacement of kit is entirely up to you.

Leaving the cassette on and running the rear mech as the tensioner is the best way of deciding if the one gear life is your thang.

But be warned you may have loads of fun,get fitter and wear almost no kit out!

I did the wierd thing with the rear mech, chopped it all down with an angle grinder (now that was fun). If you strip down a couple of old cassettes, you can use the spacers from them to space out a single cog.

And there you go, single speed on a zero budget, not glamorous, but workable.
