So im nearing the end of a build ive enjoyed greatly, its an 05 Kona Humu s/s frame which ive paired to an alfine hub for commuting duties.

Trouble is, I just dont like the alfine chainset/crank, and im struggling to find a single speed crank with the same characteristics.

Im aiming for a 39t-42t chainring and preferably 175mm arm length.
I like the look of Truvativ's Stylo and Firex GXP/Isis jobbies, but only seem to be able to find 32/33t versions, should I plump for one of these? Will I notice that much off a difference in ratio's? (im thinking yes)

Any other makes/similar syles out there to go for?

It'd make your gears quite a lot lower. Plus, you're putting far more strain on the hub, possibly more than Shimano would want you to.

Can't you just take a triple chainset you like and use that? Shorter bolts, and a single ring, job's a goodun.

possibly.....

Its just ive invested lots of time im making this build as neat and clean as possible so am being fussy with crank selection I guess.
Besides, would stripping down a standard 3 ring crank not affect the chainline?

Anyone know where I can source a bigger ringed Stylo 1.1 ?
They seem standard fit on Cannondale BadBoys etc, but I cant get my hand on a set

You'd never be able to tell, unless you looked between the crank and the bottom bracket.

Chainline depends on the chainset you use.

get a middleburn uno chainset tarty as or xt m760 and polish it and use a single ring the chain line will match up if the rings in the middle postion with any shimano ht2 chainset (like the alfine) and use a bash guard theres a guy on stw that does a nice ti bash for 20 quid

What about a new set of cooks :D or use white idustries eno's with a custom chainring, ditto XTR's with a custon chainring. Guess it depends how much you want to spend.

I thought about going the Middleburn Uno route, but they are only available with tiny chainrings.
Ive even considered their downhill crank as that has a nice stiff chainring (4mm thick) up to 44t, with the same RS7/RS8 arms as the Uno...does add up though when you add a b/b.

Ive not messed around much before with a single ring set up. the reason im keen on Stylo 1.1 or the like is the chainline can be altered to suit.
Should I look for arms with a 104 pcd and just choose a ring to suit?

....still holding out for a Stylo/Firex 1.1 on Fleabay....
