Up for sale is my Klein single speed that took me ages to build, was riding like a dream, but is no longer practical. Was perfect until i had to start cycling with my daughter in a bike seat. An extra 12 kilos means one gear just isn't enough for that hill on my way home....

It's a medium 1993 Klein rascal in the best pink-purple fade. In the real world, the colours are still really vibrant, probably 7 or 8 out of 10. It’s not perfect as I think the top tube is faded slightly, but it’s certainly not as bad as the outdoor pics would have you believe. You can see the colour most accurately on the indoor pic.

First the bad news. The frame did suffer from the dreaded Klein crack. It was repaired before I owned it, and there’s no signs of it being an issue any longer. If you cared, it could be filed down and touched up. But I was never fussed. See the pics on flickr for details. The frame itself does have a number of scratches on it. But nothing bad enough to warrant a respray... See the close ups for the top tube scratches and chainstays. The MC1 has marks from gear shifters, and the decal on one side is a bit mashed, but otherwise it’s tip-top.

And now the good news. The frame is good shape with no dents or dings. The anti chain suck device is still attached, and the cable sleeves are all included and still within the frame. I spent ages getting all the parts together, and so the spec list is my dream single speed. All the parts are top of the range retro except the wheels. The wheels were hand built by Harry Rowland about a year ago, but only have a couple of hundred miles under them. Still perfectly smooth and true. White braking surface of the rear rim has been scuffed up a bit, but the front is still good.

Although the Klein has horizontal drop-outs, I got an eccentric rear hub so that I could switch the wheels over to any frame and run that bike as a single speed with no fugly tensioners. It also allows you to remove the wheel on this without faffing about splitting the chain. Just allows an extra option.

Chain ring: Pace 42t
Rear fixed sprocket: White Industries

I’m looking for about £700 for it. Which will still be a loss on the money I’ve put into it. Open to offers, but no intention of breaking it unless I can’t find someone to take it. Would need frame and wheels to go first though…

I'm not surprised - it looks like it's 52:16 (84") or something like that :shock:

Just gear it down a bit........
 
The chainring may look big, but it’s only a 42T at the front. It’s the old single speed dilemma. If you gear it down, you can manage the hills, but get left behind on the flat…

I’m afraid needs must. And it’s got to go. But open to offers for anyone falling in love with it.

Can do it cheaper without the Brooks saddle. Would sell it for £650 with an original Flite TT instead.

Can also throw in some Onza porc II’s if someone wanted a fat tyre version.

Not that it really matters, but if you have the chainring fitted that is in the photos, then that's bigger than 42T to my eyes.
It must surely be 46 or 48 at least? - (I did a quick count at 46).

All chainrings over 32T look huge to me now anyway - too much time riding singlespeeds :roll:
