single speed advice.

If you are taking apart a 2/3 chainring chainset then remember to get some short SS specific chain ring bolts. These are fairly cheap can be had online for about £5-£10.

Also as others have mentioned the middle ring will be fine, I ride SS but I ended up going for a bigger chainring up front as without all the rear mech routing etc the bike gearing seemed very easy to pedal so you will want to bear that in mind. I ride a SS MTB for commuting 4 miles each way with some slight hills and I have a 48/18, I can often spin out on the flats so with a middle ring I reckon you will probably need something like a 16t cog for urban riding and maybe a 20t for off-road or technical single track etc.

Re:

Thanks for all the advice. I have quickly read through the replies.
Can someone explain how to work out BCD ? I need an idiots explanation.
I will be mainly using this bike for commuting to work so I will probably use a big ring up front. As the 5 mile journey doesn't have any mad hills. Many thanks, Jeff.

Imagine a circle, with the line passing through all 4 or 5 of the chainring bolts.

Take its diameter.

That's the Bolt Circle Diameter, or BCD.

Edit - beaten to it!
