A spot gives maximum light dead center whereas the flood does just that and lights the peripheral edges.

yes but a flood is more natural for the eye, a spot draws your eye to where it hits which is not alway the obsacle you need to avoid. It also unbalances the view so the bighter spot make the flood area appear darker, which means you will constantly thrive for more light.
