My neo-retro '97 Cindercone. Old bits include the frame forks and a Hope Ti BB. LAte 90's Hope Ti ubs might be retro too. The rest is modern with Crank Bros, Middleburn, Thomson, and Hope Mini Mono brakes. Frame converted jointly by myself and Steven Shand who brazed on the mount.

Forks are modified with 2000 SID XC internals which are lighter, offer 80mm of travel, and have adjustable damping. Weight is circa 1150g.

For a 5lb steel frame I think an all in weight of 22.4lb is quite impressive.

Love jupke's RM. Someone else (ameybrook perhaps?) did a real nice disk braked up Yo. Was considering doing the same with my spare Yo but fortunately an IF stepped in to fill that void

One criticism I'd level is that a lot of these neo-retro build with what look like overly tall forks.

I take it from your first point John that your misgivings about long forks are from a dynamic point of view rather than stylistic?

I think the problem is that keeping the retro long/low position and combining it with a slack head angle does mean losing a bit of the dynamics. To keep the same handling despite the slack angle, you need to go to a shorter stem and preferably a more upright posture with a riser bar (which definitely facilitates a more dynamic riding style - quite important if you're my age!)

I know some people can't stomach riser bars, and some people like Jupke (and Hilts) are very happy with the long/low position. And if that suits your riding style, then go for it. But I believe for most riders, the combination of retro frame + longer fork + shorter stem/bar combination gives really good handling with comfort and is a perfectly viable option.

Some nice bikes here, although not so classic Here are some of mines; an ibis ti in SS and another one geared. Both ride great, but I preffer the geared one...

More of an evolution than neo retro. It's my only MTB and gets riden a lot (wears out a lot too) so it seems silly to use period stuff...

I'll try the Reba's to 80mm at some stage. Umming and ahhing about whether or not to have disc mounts brazed on the back when I get it resprayed. Brakes aren't as important on the back, pads are cheaper and set up needs less adjustment. And part of me would like to keep it as is, in case I ever want to convert it to touring duites or something. Hmmm.
