Thanks…I think, I will try with a short cage, and will find a solution for a more strong spring too…
You could try drilling a second pair of holes in the spring carrier on the steel cage pivot. You might need to modify the upper pivot in the same way.

I'm still using the front Paris-Dakar hub that I bought in 1992. Only on its second set of bearings, too. Snapped the axle in the rear one, no reason to suspect that it wouldn't just break again if I mended it, so that went in the scrap metal bin. And my cranks have been retired cracked - 20 years isn't a bad innings, though.

Thanks,
But the more important spring is around the bolt for fixing the mecht on the frame. And I don't know how to remove this part…

Just prise off the circlip that retains the main fixing bolt, then push the bolt out.

But you may find that, with a short cage and less chain wrap to worry about, the spring is strong enough.

I'm working on a 'tout Mavic' build as well...

What I have so far:

Also have this Mavic M10 Cassette. I'm desperately looking for a 36h or 40h rear Mavic cassette hub. When I find one I'm going to use these Mavic cogs. The cog width isn't the same as 8-speed, as they are narrower, but its easy to figure out the overall spacing so this will work. I won't be able to use the cool yellow Mavic spacers though (will have to use custom ones, but they will be YELLOW!)

So if anyone has a 36h or 40h rear Mavic Cassette hub in 130mm let me know. I'm really thinking about removing a 5mm spacer from a Mavic mountain bike hub, although I don't know which ones have 36 holes.

Also have these Mavic 821 shifters.

So I've got some kit, but its far from being close enough to run...

I still need:

Mavic 27.2 350mm seatpost
Mavic 8 speed chain
Mavic 870 front mech (or any road/mtn triple front changer like the 830)
Mavic 841 rear mech (or any road/mtn triple rear changer like the 845)
Mavic a719 hoops 36h or 40h (depending on hubs)
Mavic CXP33 hoops 36h (if I want a faster wheelset)
Mavic 1" Headset (may cannibalize the one on old tandem)
Mavic bars 46cm or wider
Mavic 1" quill stem 10cm or longer
that Mavic cassette hub
