Should we have ebay watch on here as a site??

This site is the Yang to MTBRs 'no outing' Ying and that's why it works so well.

Exactly. We've all had stuff outed we've been following, and I'm not sure it's made any difference. If you want something you bid accordingly and don't expect (hope) noone else has spotted it.

You'll find most people on here have ebay filling their inbox with daily lists of stuff that's available anyway (or is that just me ;) ).

I've only had a couple of situations where I've been bidding against someone on here - and that's simply because I tend to set snipes well in advance then forget about them.

Well manybe not thousands of people searching for Konas...... but you get the idea! I'd love to see how many people click on 'Cooks Brothers' on the Auction Watch every day, bet it's a pretty number!

Funny thing is I actually use Auction watch function to search for other non-bike stuff as it's such a great function and I've got no worries about people on here outing auctions for my other sad passions!

I won my dream bike last week on Ebay and if it wasn't for someone "outing" it on here i would of missed it because at the time i was a bit skint so wasn't particularly looking to buy, But when it came up i went for it. 8)

but I thought nobody else had seen that perfectly listed Yeti Ultmate?

Is swings and roundabouts. I've gained and lost but if I want something bad enough I will have found it already and will win it anyway

Described to perfection and these dudes here all help each other and look for each others stuff....the more help you get the better and if you pack enough heat you will win whatever you like on eBay....yeah the prices of Retro tat have gone up in recent years but that's just a fact of life.

And yeah, every little 'click 'n' peek' us lot of OCD loons makes helps pay for the hosting fees for this brilliant site......running a site on a busy server like this doesn't come cheaply.

(wasn't meant as a rant...did sound a bit like one though   )

ebay watch is great for sellers, possibly not ideal for buyers, purely as it makes everything more visible, espically badly listed items. I dont personally have a problem with it as theres extremely little left in the way of retro that I want. its very noticeable how before this site was created there might be half a page of "retro" mentioned in UK bicycle listings, now theres regularly 5pages or more. I'm not saying its purely down to this site, but its helped! the fact that ebay have recognised & created a "vintage" listing is recognition enough that VRC is alive & well ;)

certainly the days of cheap retro items on ebay as unwanted items are long gone. the prices myself, neil, webby, peteMcC, jez, yo-grant, bri, roly & zecklim used to pick parts up for are laughable stupid cheap prices compared to current retro pricing.
if you pick up a retro bargain on ebay these days you've been exceptionally lucky! (andrea if you're reading, you have the all time record ;)

if theres a lesson to be learnt, the early 90s retro stuff I picked up cheap by the end of the late 90s. surely for the newer era of rider the later 90s, early 00s will become the next "retro" & prices will again rise? I guess we see this to a certain extent in the price of some M950 XTR stuff... time will tell :)

This excellent late-1990 Lava Dome frame, headset and P2 forks in the nice white optional colour scheme that they brought out at the end of the 1990 model year sold yesterday for £39.29, despite being listed on the eBay forum here. So I don't think we can seriously say either that prices have gone through the roof or that Retrobike buyers are responsible.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=002

It is true that a 1996 Lava Dome in the option burnt orange colour scheme sold for £410 the other day, but it was very well equipped and a very viable timeless/classy commuter or weekend off-roader. And the fact that everyone on here thinks that £410 was too much tends to indicate that nobody on here bought it and probably that the two bidders that took the price to that level in the last few seconds were nothing to do with Retrobike.

When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network.

happy days :)

wish id held onto more of it though to be honest (looks like jez, scant and pete did!)

ho hum...

No doubt outing artificially adds to the hits and item receives and also add to the number of watchers of a listed item. I can only assume then it also adds to the number of bidders as well. Add me to the "I hate outing club" unless of coarse it's my item that's selling. No doubt it artificially drives up the ending price of the auctions due to the increase in peeks, watchers and thus bidders. I hate it when an I item is outed and it gets so high it's stupid.
