What's odd, is that the British Christmas Island tests appear to be missing.

May 1957, the British started the 'Grapple' tests and the animation shows British tests in the mid pacific in that month (which probably took place as well), but it leaves Christmas Island alone completely through the film. So it could be that there were even more.

The suspected Israeli (in conjunction with S. Africa) test has never been confirmed, and is simply classed as an "event".............I have to say I've always wondered about Nuclear testing- surely it would take only half a dozen at the very most to confirm that yes these things do indeed make a feckin' big bang?
I reckon most of it is as Wu pointed out- more tests happen when international relations are at their worst, evinced by the dry spell there in the early nineties ("The Cold War is over, Austin. We won!).

I can see a number of flashes (purple for the UK, blue for the US) in the vicinity of Christmas Island (Kiritimati) - more or less on the equator due south of Hawaii.

They were testing bigger bangs in a smaller tin with better triggers. The Russians may have had fewer numbers but each one could wipe out a country. It's all so sill really. But you just know the day we get rid of all of them there will be that meteor or alien attack
