Problem - diameter of band is too big for frame..

Solution - shim, but is there an accepted way of doing this without making it look like a dogs dinner.

Some modern mech come in one size with shims - ask your LBS if they any spares in the workshop?

As always, SJS is your friend (admittedly your cheap friend who never brings his wallet with him to the pub and expects you to pay halves on a meal despite the fact that he drank a whole bottle of wine and had a starter and a pudding even though you only had a main, and that was the cheap pasta option)

Otherwise LBS parts bin for SRAM or shimano spares

To avoid @rsing up the paintwork you'll need a medium-sized indelible marker, narrow upvc tape ( or a strip cut in half lengthways ) and an alcohol swab ( like in a first aid kit ). Screw in the inner cage-adjusting-screw until the parallelogram cage is out as far as possible. With the chain off, set the mech up for the required height ( about 2-3mm above the outer chainring-hence pushing out the cage with the adjuster screw ). Mark it off above an below the screw-on band on the seat tube. Fix on the shims with a lttle of the narrow tape. Put yer mech on and unscrew the adjuster screw back to it's normal position. Clean off the markers with the swab. Done.
