Shimmed seat post

Afternoon folks,

Anyone had any problems (frame wise) running a shimmed post in their frames?

I'd like to use a Ti USE post on a built at the moment but would need to shim up to 27.2 from 25.4 and just wanted to check other peoples opinions.

Cheers,

Mark :D

Used a USe in a Marin and another in my Litespeed road bike - same, no probs.

Using a shim is the same as a full size seatpost at maximum extension with say 80mm inside the seat tube.

I've used them in the past with USE posts and have one on the Clockwork 'cos it has a stupid sized seat tube.

Never had a problem with them. I think the only issue is if there is a lot of seat post extension above the top tube. Then the length of the shims can be a problem regarding getting enough insertion (Ooh! suits you sir!).

USE on the Tempest.

Slid slightly on the first ride, so really tightened it up (bit I am using a Hope QR and collar.....prefer bolts) and no slips on the last 2 rides

I've had the same USE seatpost shimmed to 27.2, 27.0 and 26.8 since 1992! on my main rides up until 2004. Never any trouble, and I'm a Clydesdale.

One plan is to retrun the Heckler to retro spec some day and though I have some dilemma's for the build, no issue regarding the seatpost  .

Enjoy

I've two ti frames on which shimmed posts have been used in the past. On both frames the alu frame insert has worn meaning I now have to shim a direct fit post with coke cans. I'd never used a shimmed post again.

Why not get a new shim to replace the worn ones? And was the shim integral part to the Ti frames or were they seatpost shims like what USE supply with their posts?

My Ti frame comes with an aluminium shim too, it belongs to the frame not the post, and is a complex item. It has CNC machined relieved area's to provide room for Ti weld penetrations in the cluster of seatstays-seat tube and toptube.

Both frames are litespeeds. Both have alu shims bonded into the frames. Have contacted litespeed about replacements a couple of times without response. Need to get it sorted at some point, hopefully over the winter. However the coke cans work enough for the frames to be usable in the meantime!

Which ti frame do you have with the complex shim in? The litspeed shims look pretty simple to me.
