Shimano XT pedal geek question

I've seen three different styles of XT flat pedals.

(1) the big M730 bear trap with a rounded cage

(2) the smaller M735 with a slanted parallelogram cage and a plastic dust cap in the body end.

(3) very similar to (2) but with a closed-ended body and a cartridge axle you remove with the splined Shimano tool.

The archive at http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Herstelle ... no/PD.html lists three XT flat pedals, a 730, 731 and 735, but my impression was that (3) must have been an update of (2), while the 731 only appears in 1988-89.

So, two questions:

What's the part number of (3) and when was it made?

and

What does a PD-M731 look like?

If (3) is an update of the 735, I'd assume its part number must be 736 as the 737 was the first SPD. However I can't find any reference to a PD-M736...

I had a pair of those on my touring bike a while ago when I couldn't afford better. The right one fell to pieces at the bottom of the Col de la Madeleine! I had to get over the pass to buy a new pair at a little shop on the road down to Albertville. Happy memories.

They're not bad for cheap pedals, but nothing special either - resin bodies and steel cages. I think I'd go for MKS at a similar price. I've got a couple of pairs of Suntour XC Pros now that should outlast me.

My question was really just out of idle curiosity though. I've seen these mystery XT pedals (number (3)) and I'd like to know a bit more about them. I'm glad I asked the question at least, as it motivated me to do a bit of research and find out (as usual) that I knew less than I thought I did.

I used to have a pair on my M-trax 3000L, saw them and it just brought back memories! I might not use them yet, still undecided over flats or spds. Trevor.

i've seen the m735 pedals with the cartridge axle as well and would think that i was the last version of the m735 from 1993 onwards when the m737 clickie was introduced. i dont think they changed the number. according to the mombat list the m735 was available until 1995

M730
M731
M735 (standard axle)
M735(?) (cartridge axle)

I think the last ones are relatively scarce. I couldn't come up with a picture - I'll post one if a pair shows up.
