Hi Guys , need some help here dose any body know if a Shimano Xt 8 Speed Rear 735 Mech Derailleur WILL cover a 9 speed , building a dale delta vee about 1996 year , so the 735 fits the bill , ( i know it should be 8 speed but what the hell ) any body know the answer or do i need to go to a later model ?

firstly, yes, 735 will do 9 speed, but you'd want 737 for 96, surely?

M735 is 7sp, up to and including 1993 year.
1996 you're actually at the M739 rear mech, a slightly improved M737 mech.
It is 8sp also but runs 9sp setups fine.
9sp came in 1999 with XT

I run a m737 as a 9 speed with a 8sp thumbie in friction mode, no problems what so ever.

I am riding a RD-M735 with 9speed with Deore rear hub, Sram cassette, XTR 951 STIs.
I know a guy, who is riding a 735 even with a 10speed drivetrain. No problems. Thats because the inner width of the chain did not change since bitd.
There never were any 8speed thumbies. Only 6 and 7speed. Except from Microshift, right?

Kona specced bothe the above on 8sp BITD I beleive (they did spec Suntour XC pro 8 speed on upper range bikes around 94).

Nevertheless, 7x Shimanos work on 8x Cassettes, but with lesser precision thou. The 7x cassettes have slightly smaller spacers, but the rear mechs upper pulley has enough side-play (tolerance? dont know the word..) to cope with that. I ride such a setup myself on my Hercules.
They dont have an 8th click. Its the hole, where the spring is seated inside. I have disassembled them a few times. (oh boy, I am hairsplitting here
