I've just installed a new shimano deore U brake on my GT MTB. I cant get it set up. Its locked on the rim on right hand side. Can anyone give us some advice. I tried swearing at it and so left my shed to cool down lol :roll:

Try taking the arm off, make sure there is no rust or crap and then grease the stud before putting the arm back on. I'm assuming that you did tighten the bolt with the arm extended out at maximum distance away from the rim?

It was a brand new brake. I have greased it though to stop corrosion later on.
And shit, I didnt extend the arm out to maximum distance. So thats whats wrong. jesus I cant turn the ffffing wheel. Thanks. Has you can tell I'm a virgin when it comes to U brakes

Easy mistake to make, the rest of the set-up should be pretty straight forward
One thing to keep an eye on during use is the wear on the brake pads - the location of the pivot point on a u-brake means that the more the pads wear down, the more they get pushed up towards the tyre and will eventually shred it if left unattended - I speak from experience

I'm constantly learning about different types of bike components all the time. The U brake looks like a good solid piece of kit. I broke the plastic washer on the old brake and ended up sourcing a new one in Holland. So Ive got spare bits now. Thanks for reference to brake blocks. I'll keep an eye on that. I've had to order a 2mm allen key aswell for the spring adjustment thingy. I'm hoping it wont need much adjustment
