SHimano STX-RC

Hi,

My oldest of 5 bikes is my most cherished, a GT Outpost 1995 which was all replaced except the frame between 1996 and 1998.

I now use the bike for commuting short distance to work but need to replace the rear wheel, brakes, handlebars and repair some small rust marks on frame from chips. Any recommendations?

lso does anyone know where I can pick up the later STX-RC components, if at all, the version that is more a metallic oily colour.

I don't know anything about later non-silver STX-RC, but I wouldn't be that keen myself. Proper STX-RC was made ugly (but still very good functionally) and renamed Deore.

It may be of no interest to you, but I happen to have a Mavic 138 rear wheel that I built with double-butted spokes on an STX-RC 7-speed hub. Embarrassingly, I built it up thinking it was an 8-speed I now know that 8-speed STX-RC hubs are marked 8S in red letters, but unfortunately 7-speed are not marked 7S, so sensible people measure the freehub. Anyway it's a good wheel, but I don't use 7-speed so I could be persuaded to sell it if it was what you needed.

Do you have a photo of this rear wheel? As you said it is incompatible, have you used it much?

I'll get a photo of the chainset I have to show the different colour of STX RC.

Earlier STX-SE was a brownish mica colour on a lot of the components, STX-RC was generally silver and pretty plain apart from the chainset (fitted one yesterday) and this was the mica colour.
The Wifes Trek is now all STX-RC apart from the Hubs that are STX-SE, not spectacular but functional kit.

I know where there is a pair of STX-RC Mechs if you are interested.

If you look in theArchive, under Shimano you should see each years STX-RC. I think there is also another or two topic somewhere on STX / STX SE and SX-RC differences and their Mxxx numbers

I was just about to mention that thread. Had an incredible response to it.
Fluffychicken and IIRC Drystonepaul and many others provided a comprehensive breakdown of STX/STX RC that I doubt Shimano could match.

The colour you mention was 'Chromica Bronze'.
