Shimano SG & HG ?

Can anyone explain the difference between Shimano SG & HG? All I've been able to find out is that SG is superglide & HG is HG hyperglide, apart from that not a lot else.

I'm collecting parts for my build and have HG rear sprockets. Just bought a crank set but noticed it has SG rings. My chain is a SRAM PC870. Will they all be compatible?

Sg is chainrings, Hg is cassettes, both refer to the ramps and cut outs that are designed to ease the transition of the chain from one sprocket to the next.
Your PC870 chain should be fine.
