Hiya,

was there a lot of difference in the low-mid-high ranges stuff in the early 90's

Sure the 200gs was pants and 100gs was worse!

for me though back then 300 or 400lx was pretty good.

For my build I have score a 500lx rear mech and cranks. also a Deore LX r mech, the mechs are very similar to me except for an alloyed cage on the rear of the jockeys, the chap i bought the 500lx's off from here mentioned he previously snapped a 500lx crank, but surely these were decent enough kit BITD?

I know you get what you pay for but is the deore stuff really stronger and lighter? nope I was not posh enough to sample it BITD

would a Deore DX/'Deore' crank be lighter and stronger and better quality than a 500lx one?

cheers

If I remember rightly the DX and 500LX shared the same forging, the only difference was the quality of the finish with DX getting a polish, and natty Shimano lettering on the DX.

200GS/300LX identical rear mechs but better front for 300LX

LX/ DX/ XT had direct shifting (cable bolts direct to mech) whereas 400/500 LX had spruing shifting (cable bolts to sprung lever).

The quality of matierials gets better the higher you go. 500LX cranks are quite nice as all alloy (mine had SG rings) XT has big thick super hardened stuff that lasts ages.

300/ 400LX stuff is functional but not as nice to use as higher stuff.

I thought DX and XT shared the common shape and LX and 500LX shared the same shape as each other.

DX is forged with spacers for the granny ring, XT is machined

I've got 300LX cranks, LX, DX and XT sitting around somewhere.

300LX was painted

500LX/ LX rear mechs very different - look where the cable bolts to.

Remember when Deore LX sat under Deore in the range? Or Exage trail and mountain? Trail was heavy plastic coated steel, mountain was a little better.
