Fiddling about with the gears on a bike last night, indexing out of whack, and noticed it had a black FH-M560 LX Rear hub, and a 7-speed cassette.
However I also noticed a spacer behind the cassette. (looks like it has 10S" on it, 10-speed cassette spacer?).
I thought M560 was 7 speed? And 8-speed came in later, So why is there a spacer behind the 7-speed cassette?
Is it a road cassette? (I thought mtb & Road 7-speed cassettes were the same width?).

What's going on?

Re: Shimano LX M560 query

Probably the hub has been rebuilt with an 8/9/10 speed freehub body They are completely interchangeable provided you can get some cones/dustcaps to match. You can even upgrade the seals by pillaging later hubs, they all fit.

Re:

Hadn't thought of that.
If that's the case I'd be happy as it'd be an easy "upgrade" to 8-speed.
I'll have another look this evening.

Re:

Not one, but two spacers behind the cassette (one very thin, one thicker).
It's an 11-28 7-speed Hyperglide cassette. It's all made up of separate parts instead of the usual big lump and then the 11T cog.
It has some drilled holes in the cogs, so it's not a cheapo cassette, but not top end Shimano either. I did check there was a spacer between each cog when putting it back together.
Tried an 8-speed cassette, wouldn't fit, last sprocket wouldn't fit on the freehub.
So I've put it back together, shifting is fine.
The only thing i didnt do was try the 7-speed cassette without the spacers
No idea why the spacer is there though . Ho-hum...

Re: Shimano LX M560 query

7spd freehub body most definitely as it has the Uniglide threads

Cassette is probably an 8spd remade to be a 7spd. 4.8mm spacing as opposed to 5mm spacing on the proper cassette hence perhaps the iffy shifting

Re: Shimano LX M560 query

...and and and

if that really is a Hyperglide C cassette, they dont fit older freehub bodies properly and require a spacer so the 11t cog can fit and the lockring grips
