The copper washer is a bush for the lever to run on. So yes you need it.

As a rule of thumb, if its in a thing.....its probably there for a purpose....

That's not what I wanted to hear I did wonder if it was the bush though, makes sense! Thanks though!
Ah that's a shame, I had a pair and I've put the one back together and it's working great.. I'm just stuck on this one. I wonder if anyone her may have a spare bush or and old broken shift I could buy for parts maybe? I just spend ages buffing the housing too, looks great now just doesn't work haha
