Shimano cleats

If I go and buy some new Shimano SPD pedals, can I fit the cleats to a pair of shoes and then use these with 525, 737 pedals etc?

I'm trying to decide what pedals to have on my bikes, that I can use the same pair of shoes with. What does everyone else do?

As far as I am aware the shimano spd cleat design has not changed in all the years I have been using them so pedal compatibility should not be a problem.

I am prepared to be shot down though

There is one exception to that, I think it's the 858? I'm sure it starts with an 8 though

as far as I know the odd one out is the 858 which uses the multi-release cleats (SH55 or something like that). I have these cleats and they work with all spd's, however 'standard' cleats (?SH51) will not work with the 858 spd's.

SH52 - specific to M858 (wider jaws)

my sh51 work fine with my 737 . and they release from both sides .

yes I thought the SH51 worked with 737 too. but I may be wrong.
