Shimano cleats

If I go and buy some new Shimano SPD pedals, can I fit the cleats to a pair of shoes and then use these with 525, 737 pedals etc?

I'm trying to decide what pedals to have on my bikes, that I can use the same pair of shoes with. What does everyone else do?

As far as I am aware the shimano spd cleat design has not changed in all the years I have been using them so pedal compatibility should not be a problem.

I am prepared to be shot down though

There is one exception to that, I think it's the 858? I'm sure it starts with an 8 though ;)

as far as I know the odd one out is the 858 which uses the multi-release cleats (SH55 or something like that). I have these cleats and they work with all spd's, however 'standard' cleats (?SH51) will not work with the 858 spd's.

current standard single release sh51 cleats work with all shimano mtb spd pedals aside from original 737s & the later 858s
