Shimano AX questions!

Suntour had the patent on the slant parallelogram which made their rear mechs work a shit load better than anything Shimano at the time.

1982 catalog - if you look at the standard 600 mechs, they look a bit archaic in comparison to Suntour

In MTB terms, try a Deerhead M700 XT rear mech with the a later M730 and see how much better the M730 is.

And his bike is not unusual as 'groupsets' werent a normal thing until later in the decade.

If he were to go full AX he'd have to find the brakes and the frame would have to be sorted for the shifters.

an excuse to put more tasty road bikes up

The "Servo Pantograph" started by the Shimano Crane wasn't a million miles behind the Suntour "Slant Pantograph" but I have to agree the Suntour was slicker at changing :)

Re:

This takes me back, I had a Raleigh Road Ace for a short while back in the 80s with a full 600ax "aero nonsense" groupset on it, like this one:

It was all OK, but I reckon Suntour of the same period was nicer, prettier and better finished. I really liked the Cyclone, I thought the way the cable was routed through the parallelogram was really neat, if fiddly. It was light too: http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Sun ... 00%29.html
