Shimano 11 and 12 speed compatibility.

I was wondering if I could run an 11 speed xt shifter with a 12 speed xt mech?

I have looked online and the results were inconclusive and confusing. If I've read things correctly I sometimes get a hard no, some say it works flawlessly, some say you can run 12sp shifter and 11sp mech but not the other way round.

I'm confused. Anyone know one way or the other?
