Shill Bidding on eBay

and yet when the auction happened they did bid that amount and no one else made them do that..are we agreed on that?
what has that got to do with anything... its about shill bidding, the practice of or not, why's and Whatnots.
nothing to do with what anyone put as a Max bid.

aka 'The principle of the matter'
he has already mentioned it's not the price that matters.

The seller can charge what they like when they sell something. I hear quite often "splitting multi-packs is illegal" which is quite funny.

But in an auction it's illegal, can't really believe you lot are debating it!

In all due fairness, the OP didn't get the hump until he suss'd out the bidding scam...

...up to that point he was quite prepared to pay what appeared to be the going price.

In much the same way that those who express contrition for committing a crime, whose only actual regret is getting caught, perhaps?

Which in no way condones any sharp practice :|

As an aside; in the past I have watched bidding wars drive used items ridiculously high, and in the days before ebay changed the rules I would contact the highest Bidder and include a link to the same item at a far lower price...

...brand new, from a Dealers website!

Not once did I get a 'Thankyou' by return, but the vehemence of the abuse from those who decided all I was doing was trying to 'steal the item' from under their noses was wondrous in its ignorance!

Such is the mentality of the Buyer in a 'bidding war...'

hence, .. what I typed.

I might be stretching here, but from the looks of this picture this sellar might be operating from a local bike shop.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LITESPEED-SIE ... 51a81d976d

Id be intrested if any one here might recognise the place, It might provide some leverage for buyers who have been unfairly (And Illegally) scammed into paying inflated prices.

Can someone tell me when a 51cm C-C seat tube became M/L? 21 cm TT C-C? WTF?

And £3500 complete? that's a bit rich. I can pick up a Dogma 2 w. Di2 DA for just a bit above that in $.

Any idiot knows that to successfully increase your selling price on Ebay you get friends or acquaintances to do the bidding, thereby avoiding this type of accusation by loser bidders. So I'm told.

The fact people still get all upset about Ebay after all the years amuses me tbh. It's there to be used and abused for your advantage. All the BS about the spirit of a 'trading community' is long gone. It's not 98 any more.

You know what, if you're not willing to pay the price you won it for... don't bid that high.

Shill bidding is wrong, illegal and immoral, but if people were sensible about what they were willing to pay for things and not get involved in mindless bidding wars, then it wouldn't be a problem.

I only use BIN on ebay now because I tired of idiots bidding up prices beyond actual worth, shilling or otherwise.Just my 2p.

im the same now.. there are less buy it now bargains than in the past but they do still come up...

<shrug> seems to me this thread isn't so much about "the spirit of a 'trading community'" and more about illegal behaviour. That's a tad more damning than merely not being a good sport.

In that case going to Ebay or the Police would be a better route than Retrobike.

Same conclusion though, I'd wager.

Shill bidding is as old as auctions. Anonymity of online just makes it easier. The ways to avoid it have been documented above.
