There is an illustrated service manual floating through cyberspace with instructions on how to service XT thumbies... and live to tell the tale. Just can't seem to find it. Any pointers?

Cheers, Giel

Thanks mate! That's exactly what I was looking for (note to self: bookmark!). On top of that you gave me a good excuse to stop working today and bring out the spanners :)

Cheers, Giel

Sweet, now I can get my thumbies that are in kit form and put them back together. But first find some new steel balls as the ones I had rolled off to far corners of the shed when I dopped the box I had the bits in.

But as to the article, is there an exploded drawing anywhere, I ask because mine has some little bearing races in it that I have get to find out where they go beyond reasoning it out, trial and error or finding my order of disassembly image somewhere on my hard drive.

So silverclaws, you can now mod your signature and remove the reference to thumbies. A forum search for the servicing xt thumbies (which I did prior to posting) turned up all threads you've posted in :D :?

Yep, I will modify my signature soon, but these thumbies have vexed me for a while, but in order to get XT, I got Deore and changed the delightful bits around then decided XT grey was yucky and put the Deore caps back on.

But the servicing I did back in the day amounted to no more than spraying GT85 against the join between the cap and the shifter body and let capilliary action work at getting lube inside. The process was satisfied by watching the grey, orange and brown fluid yuck drip out the bottom of the shifter until it ran clear, my shifters ran sweet for over ten years until I lost my bike.
