Servicing Old Hope Hubs

The bearings are easy to change. They are 60012RS if I recollect and can be picked up for £3-4 a bearing. The best/easiest way for changing the bearings is to heat the alloy of the hub bearing housings with a Black and Decker heat gun very slightly. The cartridge will literally drop in and out then and there is no need for any type of force as the new bearing will drop in housing. Heating the housing causes it to expand at a quicker rate than the steel of the bearing creating clearance. You can also cool the new bearings in the freezer for 30 mins to make the clearance greater as the cold will shrink the bearing.

I find the best thing to do with Hope rear hubs is send them to Hope for a full service. It costs about £35 quid but you almost get a brand new hub back... ready for another 5 years abuse :o)

Neither have I - but there was a reason Campag made a tool for doing the same job on their freehubs. You have to admit it is a bit fiddly.

Unless you have long spindly fingers of course.....

That's because the part where the Campag pawls sit is a lot more recessed than on the Hope hubs.

BTW I've got one of those tools and it's not for sale. :P :P

Thats a pretty good deal to be fair when you take into consideration the cost of the materials, time and not having to buy tools you have not got to do the job.
