Servicing Old Hope Hubs

So then, on the off chance :wink: that I managed to find an old set of Hope hubs in unknown condition mechanically, are they easy to service? Quite fancy the old Ti ones...
 
My LBS has one for sale :wink:

Quite cheap too IIRC, its red, I can give you their details if your interested.
 
Thanks Pickle, but going neutral on the major components so they can be moved between bikes - don't want to buy wheels each time I get a new frame. (Do you want that GT HT frame and fork by the way? Will happily box it for you, just arrange a courier and it is yours)

Bearings are easy to change, but you have to be careful you don't trash them when fitting them.

Rear axles can be a little bit fragile if hammered. Never snapped one but bent a couple.

Biggest nightmare is getting the freehub body back on without the pawls and springs falling off and rolling under the workbench.

That's the easiest part! When you've got the freehub body on the axle hold the three pawls in with your fingers and rotate the body in an anti-clockwise direction while pushing it on. Job done.

I can honestly say that I've never lost any pawls or springs in this way.

If you find you can't hold the pawls by hand then you could try wrapping a gear wire around them to hold them in place. Once they're past the hub seal you can remove the gear wire.

Neither have I - but there was a reason Campag made a tool for doing the same job on their freehubs. You have to admit it is a bit fiddly.

Unless you have long spindly fingers of course.....
