Not much you can do about the dangerous roads except keep your wits about you. I sympathise. That said my commute is mostly busy A-roads, crossing a motorway junction, plus some hilly bits, and I do it on a single speed.
The distance thing I'm not buying as easily though, my colleague cycles in on a fixie 3 times a week over 25 miles each way, occasionally taking the Mendips to make it a bit more challenging too.
As some wise man on here rightly once said: 'the hardest part of any ride is getting your leg over the saddle in the first place'.
I never thought I would do it until I did then I realised it's really not that bad.
Know where you're coming from mate but massive trucks with mad drivers and no slip road or kerb mean it's a no no.
My job involves scooping up the remains of people that took a chance or were simply unlucky on the very same road so no chance I'll be riding it any time soon

Not fit enough to ride it atm although I accept that's only a matter of putting in the miles.
