Selling off Hamsterley Forest

Trust me, the loss of Hamsterley forest would be no great loss to the world of bikes. It is a man made forest sat in the middle of vast moorland that sheep apart, no one has been interested in for centuries. I can't for a moment see why Wimpy would snap it up to build 9,000 excutive home-a-likes. As for the local communties and jobs. If i were working up there i would not be too saddened when the new masters arrive. They still need labour and local expertise- foresting is still rather labour intensive. They will bring in investment, better machinery to replace the old, dated and clapped out machines they work with now and most importantly start to make a profit. You have more chances of keeping your jobs when you work for a profit making business than a government quango that could not organise a shag in Hamburg whilst losing money left, right and centre.

FC only cost the Government £15m a year and attracts around 40 million visits a year and put over £2 billion into the economy.

I'd say that was good value.

Those figures are tosh. For starters the FC should be making £15 million a year, not losing it. Secondly the figure of 2 billion is completely made up. Yes, leisure, tourism and trail centres may bring money into these local areas but it is money that is already within the UK ecconomy, not money coming in from overseas visitors for example- so hardly generating additional money then.
So looking through the misinformation and spin we are still left with a £15 million loss.

dr s do you work in forestry?

your very knowledgable in the subject 8)

No but i have cut a few trees down with my cars over the years.

I did lots of research a few years back on the subject as i was considering investing on forested land. Instead i put my money in investments with a foreign bank and lost it all. But thats life.
