I have just been told that the government are trying to sell off Hamsterley Forest in County Durham to private buyers, can I urge anyone who has ridden there to contact their local MP's and lobby against this, contact the local newspapers letters pages etc, get it reported?

It will be a very sad day if the forestry land all gets sold off.

Lee.

and so it begins....

are you sure? i dont know business but surely the tenders will be publicly available? even if you have to through the data protection act

meaning you can see what potential the developers might have for the land, obviously could be bad but who knows. maybe a bike company will buy some
unlikely but im saying many doors are open

Not another forestry sell off thread. This has to be the third or fourth.

Hamsterly is a man made commercial plantantion. It is being sold as a commercial plantation, it will remain a commercial plantation. Trees will be cut down and replaced just as they have been done for the last 50 or so years. Nothing is different. Whats with all the uproar?

Perhaps we could all have a whip round and buy a retrobike land forest

Reckon it's because there is no trust in the government, it sounds like a really bad idea and people are concerned that things will change for the worst..

Having spoken to a few other groups about this, I still think it sounds really bad but also that there is a chance it could be a good thing (or neutral).

Trouble is, by the time we find out just how bad (or good) it is, it'll be too late.

your views have given me a bit more perspective than i was being shown before  cheers
and true, its like politics, i hate to get involved because genreally joe public will never know the full story. not conspiracies etc. just would be a huuuge undertaking to know pretty much everything about certain topics that can span massively. often being at least a lifes undertaking. so without knowing everything how can we be so biased

i thought that already, i know we say now and again buy this as retrobike museum pieces etc. but wouldnt this just be perfect?!
its a fair sum even if alot chipped in but dr.s pointed out some good benfits. yes yes the land is being sold but if we cant beat the problem then why not become part of the solutuon

I am very much aware it's a commercial forest, as said by someone else and of which I back up, I have no trust in this government whatsoever, I worry for the local people in case they lose their jobs. I hope upon hope that there is no private development of the area, you never can 'know' what's going on. I would also hate to see any extortionate charges being levied too.

But hey, what do I know.

Might be good news. Hopefully they'll build some more trails and repair area 13 coz its fooked at the moment.

Valid concerns imo.. the jobs thing could be quite the opposite though. If the forest is maintained properly with things like a coppicing program, jobs could be created rather than lost.. which would be nice..
