i can understand. the main reason it is done in "euro" circles is its often the only way to get big wheels under the arches. it usually makes for a more stable tyre as there is zero flex in the side wall. that's the theory behind drift cars having stretched rears.
That, along with the necessary overinflation to keep them on the rim, means that the grip is reduced, so the tyres slide more easily allowing the drift to happen.
In other words the fashion states "I could afford rims too wide for the design of my car, and as well as/because of this, I can't afford/fit the right tyres, so I'm happy to put up with less grip and worse handling than the originals gave the car for a questionable gain in aesthetics."
