Scott Windriver 1990

So I found a Scott Windriver to add to my small collection of old MTB´s.






Frame number is F9107908
I belive its a 1990 or 1991 modell ( more 1991 based on the frame number) as to a 1990 cataloge I did find on the net.

According the the online cataloge size is Small, just about fits me, even a Medium would be best size for me.
Color is same but spec is some difference, mainly crank that is a Deore, not Deore DX and rims are not same (are Araya), and the one on bike are same modell/make but diffrent color for some reason, changed? Also I do wounder if rear brake is stock?

Condission is quit good, even frame has some marks. Components seem on OK shape and triggers work as should. Needs normal stuff as a bike standing for while, needs new shift and brake cables, inner as outer, brake pads, a front tire, rear seem new!, seat has seen its best and rear wheel has 2 spokes broken/missing. An new chaing would also be good. Former owner has lost the key so the aftermarket look has to be cut off. Seatpost is NOT stuck! So a light restauration needed. I think the price I did pay for it was not bad, € 20, that`s about £ 14 nowdays

Hi,

Your bike must be 1990 or probably earlier. My Windriver is from 1991 (similar to this viewtopic.php?t=176546) and it already has cantilevers front and rear, so the fact yours has a rear U-brake means it's older. Also, your front cantilevers are "normal" while in mine are already the "low profile" type. And finally, your chainrings are Biopace, which disappeared in 1991 as far as I remember.

Much more I can't say, but I like a lot the color combination on your bike! Be careful taking care of the paint, it is not the strongest point on old Scotts...

I only found the 1990 cataloge that I linked to in first post. A thing that is difference on my bike from the 1990 cataloge is the U brake rear and the way the cable go to the, my has a tube that is welded to the frame that the cable goes thro, like on my 1993 Specialized Hardrock Sport. In the pic in the cataloge it had a cable outer like the pic in the tread you refer to. I have to look closer at the components also. Acording to some places the Shimano Deore DX was introduced in 1990, but I also have a 1999 bike that has Deore parts that same place says it was introduced 2000, so...I guess it then could be a 1989 bike?

Thanks for the paint notice, someone has already done some repair painting on the blue, and looks more like a splatter painting than repair painting, but you don´t see it that good in the pics.

Back to the U brake, what kind of brake pads does it take?

So I have worked a bit on the bike, new brake pads, new shift cables (inner as outer) to the rear mech and brakes (front not competed yet). As I did take the look off, I could see that the rear rim was damaged beone to be tuned wht just 3 new spokes that where missing. The rear hub, a DX M650

, was smooth, so as haped to have 2 spare Araya VP-20 rims form a old Marin Muirwoods (witch hubs where shoot) I did relpase that Araya RX-7 rim whit that. As hapen the front wheel seem to been replaced at some time, as it has a almost unused rim, same Araya VP-20 by the way, on a Exage RM50 hub that is low spec compare to the other bikes parts, but have to do.


The other parts are mostly DX M650, aside the crank, witch left part is a MT60 Deore and right side a M650 DX, why I dont know.



The rear U-Brake I did not find any markings on aside text Deore.
The chain I just lubed for now, its not stretched at all, but might stretch fast, have to see.

Front brake is sorted, now just need to find a new saddle before having a first ride

Had 2 rides whit it now, about 60km, works nice







I do have to take off that side stand, it was ok first ride but second ride it started to bonce around, not nice. Then as the bike has budget tires (a Spectra front and a CST from a market bike rear) I have to look at some better tires, even the Spectra is made by same company as Maxxis....(Spectra is a Swedish Crescent brands aftermarket product brand, and for example their chains are KMC!) and as the rims need wire tires, I mainly think of Conti Race King (26x2,0) or Schwalbe Rapid Rob (26x2,1). I do have a set of Togia Factory XC tires in good nic, but might want something faster. Ok a bike of this age should get tan/amberwalls......UPDATE ordered a set of Splashback 1,8´s, migth swmp wheels whit the Marin splatter I have....

Back to the build year. I found a 1989 brochure, and its sure not a 1989, it has a U-Brake rear, but located behind the BB under lower chainstays. The 1990 brochure I found has right spec, color, but the bike in the brochure has cantis also rear. So a early 1990?

A update.

Wednesday a package whit some nice inside did arrive

A set of Charge Splatchback 26x1,8 tires.

As they are folding, and better on other rims than the Araya VP-20, I swamped wheel whit my 1990 Marin Muirwoods "splatter". The Araya VP-20/Exage RM-50 front wheel is actually same as the Muirwood had as stock. Also this way the Windriver gets stock spec DX M650 hubs both front as rear. The rims are now Rigida Ralley 300 mounted whit Splashback tires.


As I had mounted the tires I noticed that even the tread don´t seem directional, the sidewalls do have direction arrows

The tires was tight to fit, but easy to get straight on the rims. No issues like I have been reading off.
They fit the bike nice I think. Would proberly have order 2,1´s if they had been awable. I did not find a web shop whit them in stock.....

Anyway, Looks like this on the bike

I really like this bike, even not a minter. Did remove the side stand by the way. And need to find a matching toutch up paint for it, the green, as all paint is gone where the side stand was mounted

Nice work!

Regarding the 2.1 Splashbacks, they are really big when mounted, so 1.8s are a better bet. And they obvoiusly aren't directional as you say.
For touch up paint, try nail varnish. Something I learnt on this forum! Worked on several of my bikes
