Scotland independence and the armed forces?

I think Alan Wells is past his best these days

If I had a wife like Margot I bet I'd be able to run fast too. :D

The "United Kingdom" is quite a misnomer isn't it. No king and not very convincingly united.

If our Scottish friends go independant they will clearly no longer consider themselves part of the United Kingdom and presumably (?) will expect to be referred to as "Scottish" and not "British". Will they then accept the island on which their land sits being geographically referred to as "Great Britian" or will they expect the land mass to be renamed to reflect their determination to be non-British? And will the name "Great Britain" even still apply, since the "Great" part refers to geographical size and not political ego? The same then of the wider "British Isles" as well.
What will become of the Union Flag (aka Jack)? Will the UK remove all trace of the St. Andrew's cross and if we don't will Scotland file some legal demand that we do so?

Having been an expat for many years i have noticed a very clear propensity of Scottish Brit expats to tout the Scottish flag in clear defiance to the Union and the Union Flag. On the back of their cars for example. In conversations with Welsh and Scottish expats over the years i have found in general the Scottish to be far more vitriolic toward the English than are the Welsh. Also much more so than the English are toward the Scots. Can't comment on Irish having met very few. I have found the devisiveness of the Scots quite tiresome, though i respect their right to opinion and viewpoint. These are just my observations, not a reliable survey, but clearly a broad swathe of Scots do yearn for independance though i do wonder if it's more to do with pride and romancing Scottish identity than a thorough awareness of the probable political and economic consequences both now and long term (be they good or bad or both). I say if the Scots vote for independance then fine, let them try it and with out any bad blood on either side. If later all realize it wasn't such a great idea i'd also welcome a future reintegration. The whole thing will be complicated, expensive and arguably not prudent but what the hell, give it a go if that's what they want. Trouble is, it's not what they ALL want...!

Its not what they all want, that old democratic chestnut

The current UK government is not wanted by all but under our democratic system a south east england centric conservative government rules over far flung regions who did not vote for them. This is accepted so dont come along with the if 100% of the population are not in favour of independence it shouldn't be allowed argument.

As for Great Britain and what you'd call if Scotland left why not call it what it was before Scotland joined. Infact why not call in England, most citzens of the world seem to think UK citizens are English and Scotlands just a part of it.

As for the flag, its just a symbol, England is becoming increasingly proud of its St George's cross and rightly so.

Final point regarding the armed forces, why cant scots continue to serve. The Irish are still present despite fighting a bloody independence war with the UK in the 1920's and with all the IRA trouble that followed was it wise to keep them in the UK ranks ? Nepal is now under the control of Maoist communists but we still have Ghurka troops and if you look closely at our forces today we now have a greater diversity of nationalities from the commonwealth than ever before.

In your rush to disgree i think you missed my intention. My first paragraph about geographical nomonclature and flag design was a discussion, not an argument. I did not present any argument for or against anything.

The nature of your retort suggests to me defensiveness and/or irritation with my statements. Well that's up to you but i'm entitled to my opinion whether you like it or not. I am not anti Scottish or anti independence even though you may have interpreted it that way. As i wrote, if the Scots want independence then as far i'm concerned the Scots are welcome to it. No problem.

All democratic governments preside over people who did not vote for them. That would happen in an independant Scotland as well.

I wish the Scots well in whatever path they choose.
