Say 'hello' to OldGit

Hello, didn't think I would join another forum, this is my third for three separate interests.

I own a Proflex 955, still has elastomers and I may need help with those in due course. The Proflex has Middleburn XC cranks and BB, hope hubs, mavics laced with DT revolution and mostly everything else is Shimano, I'll post a photo in due-course.

I'm just re-building my partners bike and worry that I'm doing the right thing. It's a 1993/5 Mountain Goat built for her and collected by her from Chico California and I think that's the main reason I'm re-building it. 7 years ago I resurrected the frame from an early grave, the head tube split, I had a collar built by a pal who worked at Rolls-Royce, I pressed the collar in place and on the basis this bike would only do lumpy roads and green lanes I think it's safe.

The Mountain Goat had early Manitou's fitted, I've just had to trash those, apart from the elastomers gone the tops of the stanchion tubes and the fork-crown had stress cracks, mostly everything else was early XT and though it was working I have binned the lot for modern 9 speed LX and some XT together with an entry level Manitou that will doubtless be better than the one I took of and binned.

At almost £450 it seems expensive but then the Proflex cost me £2300 to build in 1995 and I just sold a Kona KK that cost me nearly £3000 three years ago.

Puts the £450 into perspective do you think or am I mad hanging all that new stuff on the 'Old-Goat'

I'm going to post you some photo's of the Goat later today.

Say helloooooo.

Regards
Richard (AKA OldGit)

The KK was a King Kikapu with Fox-air front and back, I was never to use it again off-road because of my poor hips and I have the Proflex for keeping me sane.

"I binned the XT"

Well yes  I better get the stuff out in case someone wants it, yes ?

I just needed to start from scratch with that bike, not knowing what was going to 'go' next and affect other stuff just drives me mad.

Useful stuff includes 7 speed brake/shifters, canti's, XT front and rear mechs, an Answer high-rise stem with a split clamp for 1-1/8" steer-tube, XT chain-set, all rings are still useful, 7 speed cassette still useful.

I'll have another look-see.

Here is the 'Goat', can you see the collar I pressed onto the head-tube, sort of like hip replacement for a bike.

Sorry, I thought I had tilted this one, bugger.

Anyway, whilst I appreciate your comments, 'she' always complain that my bikes are always so responsive and accurate to ride whilst hers is always clanging about in-between gears and other stuff always going wrong so I decided to bottom-it.

I got enough problems without another bike giving me more so it's costing about £450.

Serious question is, considering you can buy a bike for that is it worth it ? I'm fitting some XT, a couple of bits of LX, nothing below LX and a Manitou six, that'll do for trips around the lanes that she does these days and the frame has a little class. Yes ? :D

I dont think it is allowed to build a Mountain goat with cheap bits I am afraid .

I would love the XT bits for a Marin build that im about to start. can you pm me with how you would like to go?
Thanks

Sorry for being rude...... Welcome to the site Richard.
Like the fix on the goat, I think that some people are too quick to give up on some damage without exploring options, but that is often good news for those of us who are able to think a little "outside the box".
Too many good bikes have gone for scrap that could have gone on for years yet.
Looking forward to seeing the pics of the proflex.
