does anybody on here know if there is any logic to santa cruz frame numbers, i have an old heckler and would like to know exactkly when it was born, and a friend has one of the first chameleons, would like to scare him by telling him how old it is! ta.

As the man said. You can date Chameleons by the drop outs too - earliest have no hole on the RH side for a disc mount adaptor.

Don't scare him - the early ones are lovely! I ride a '98 as my main bike.

What forks you running on that? I've got an early Chameleon running 130mm Marzocchis but I think the bike is a bit 'choppered-out'. Be interested to know what your set up is :)

Marzocchis, suspension? Pah!

Pipedream Sirius rigids - these are suspension corrected for the equivilent of a 100mm travel fork and bring the head angle to about 70 deg. 130mm Marz' should not be too bad - with sag maybe 69 deg?

ok, cool. so that would mean my heckler is 2000 (2K are the first 2 digits?)

oh, the chameleon, its running 97 Z1 bombers. really nice to ride in tight single track. 100mm of oil bath plushness. it is early, no provision for that ugly disc mount adaptor.

Could be right, but what would be a 2002? 02xxxx, 2K2xxxx? If someone else here has a newer Santa Cruz (post 2000), perhaps they can post their know year vs first 2 digits of their BB serial number.

Also, If you e-mail Santa Cruz tech support, they can tell you. I had to inquire with them as to which front shock size my Tazmon was designed for (65mm-80mm-100mm)....they even replied with torque specs, bb chainline, rear shock info /psi....basically a copy and paste of the complete spec, year, etc. Good info to have.

Yep, SC tech are good - you can fit the disc mount to the early models just need to drill the hole and do a little filing. Again, SC tech will send a PDF if asked.
