Rusty (car) rims

One of the tyres on the truck deflated overnight so, suspecting a puncture, Wifey took it along to the local tyre place to get it sorted..

Apparently the issue is with the (steel) rim, not the tyre.

Now, in the past, our friendly neighbourhood tyre chap has cleaned up the rim with wire brush and (occasionally) angle grinder and refitted the tyre no worries..

But this was some time ago and a different tyre place in a different town (and county).. this place reckons that they aren't allowed to do that any more.. and also that we'd be hard pushed to find someone who would fit an inner tube to get us out of a fix

What's the skinny on this?? .. is this tyre place having a lend of us because they can't be arsed to do some good ol' fashioned maintenance??

as far as i am aware it isnt an issue to clean the rim up? i am not an expert but there is a tyre dealer on here - rekiborter IIRC??

cant see for the life of me why they cant do that anymore. more like wont...

the tube thing is possibly true though.

can you get them to remove the tyre then clean it up yourself?

dave

they didnt want the jod as its a poo one
take it some where else
they usually clean up the bead seat with a flap wheel/wire brush then paint in liquid rubber pop tyre back on and robert is your mothers brother

yes i used to work in a tyre fitting centre

Cheers chaps... I thought can't be arsed was more likely than and H&S mentalness...

However . . . given that local places want much wonga to fit a tyre (and apparently the non airtight rim may have fubar'd the tyre bead or something), we spied a set of alloys with decent tyres on evilbay for £65 b.i.n. so Wifey insisted we hit the tit and get 'em..

Looks like we're going to Huntingdon this week to collect.. 8)

With a little luck (and if I can get them off), I'll be able to sell our current rubber and get my money back.. (the new rims are 15" and we currently run 16" so the tyres are of no use to us)..

we used to remove tyre clean around rim with needle gun fit tyre then bead seal it
people dont like fitting tubes because appearently they go down quicker then normal tyres imagine doing motor way speeds an getting a puncture

sounds like the garage had bigger jobs to do an couldnt be bother to earn peanuts on a tyre

Beadseal / Rimseal should be regarded as a temporary fix. If the rim is rusty (even alloy rims can corode inside) the bead will not seal properly. The quote about tubes is correct plus tubes are not made for the majority of tyre sizes. The liner of tubeless tyres is ribbed to help cooling, the ribbing causes a tube to rub and eventualy burst. Even tyre shop have to make money and pay wages. Oh, and welding rims these days is a big no-no.

Well... £65 and a trip to Huntingdon later, we have these...

If I can get the other tyres off the steel wheels I'll put them on ebay (the tyres, not the wheels.. ) I think..
