Running XTR M900 Hubs with a Modern 10/11 Speed Cassette

Has anyone ever done this?

I was thinking of using a bargain M900 wheelset to solve a temporary problem, with a modern XT 10-speed cassette (11t small cog) but read this on Sheldon's site and it gave me pause:

What do we think?

Will I need to switch out that cog to make it work?

Just a thin shim at the back until the slack is taken up.
Job done.
That's how I would use my 11-28 and 11-30 8 speed setups.
(and still do if needed).
Your chainline is a bit out, but with 8speed not a problem. With silly speed, no idea, doubt it'll be a problem either.
9 speed has been OK too. (m770/m780) at least I think I'm running them currently on m900 freehub.

Or just use any other wheelset.

its very dependant on the frame used. a friend tried to install 11 speed cassette on his early 90s cannondale & the cassette lockring was borderline touching the dropout. the width of the cassette can be a problem with frame clearance.
