Round the world Retro ride trip, bike set-up advice

Some great advice here!

How reliable are the Roholff's? I mean even if they are 99% reliable, that 1% means i'm stuffed if it goes wrong... conventional bike gear is generally available all round the world, i might be talking poo though as i've had no experience on Roholff hubs!

Magura's would be nice, especially as the bike would probably weigh 60 to 80 pounds! What are the chances of snagging the hydraulic lines, or a seal breaking?

Cheers Al, that's good to know

Where was that pic taken, it's stunning!!

I missed off tyres! Would DMR Moto's be too much? Good balance of on and off road, hard wearing.

My house was called Sunrise, Iv'e changed it to base camp!

But don't tell the mrs,Al.

Would probably use a variety of tyres, you would be going through a fair few, from what was available to road specific and semislicks. Is the moto designed as a street tyre? Rolling resistance would probably be a killer. Have a look at contis site GP 4 seasons , top tourers etc.

Schwalbe Marathons seem to be the expeditioners' choice.

Whatever you do keep it simple, that way it's easier to fix, and probably won't break anyway. Slightly over-heavy midrange steel frames are popular, like old Marins, Rockhoppers etc.

Sound advice. Only three things will survive nuclear war. Cockroaches, Kieth Richards, (I saw a light man and thought we were on) and my 1990 Saracen Kili Flier Comp.

Why the big deal with Cockroaches?

They might be ok in a nuclear attack, but they are bugger all use when faced with other extermination methods

To paraphrase, seems a case of using a lump hammer to crack a roach
