Just spray up as normal, they'll be fine for a while. Then you can change the colour.

I've had some sprayed direct with various gold, bronze and copper acrylic (iirc) paint, small one from wilko's and homebase. And they've not gone bad yet. (two years or so now)
I sanded and polished (the finer the finish, the better and more 'SL' like the finish will be. If you are just colour matching to the bike, then don't polish too hard.

I polished my lowers a year and some ago and then spray-bomb clear-coated them myself ( no other special preparations), and they're still shining fine.

Chromic acid is very bad. Don't use it.

Finished the paint, just need to tidy the overspray.

Used this from Aldi, £2.99 a can
