indy SL was RockShox top-of-the-line

i don't think this is quite true

...i also doubt a titanium merlin would have came with RS indies

Yes, I think that it was (ca. 1995). The Merlin is from 1992 (I obtained it this year), so it cannot have been the original fork, but has been added by the previous owner.
