Greetings!
Well, it appears as though size actually does matter, for upon meeting up with a wonderful local (and very well re-known) bike builder who agreed to set aside some time to help me chase, face, and install my NOS bottom bracket and my new head-set into my ’89 Brodie Romax frame yesterday (the build begins); I learned, to my dismay, that because of the different stack height of the Cane Creek 110 series head-set, the 1” threaded steering tube of my RockShox Mag 20 crown is now about a half inch too short (it was cut down to 178 mm length at some point, and I now need one at least 187 to 190 mm long). So – my build has stalled, pending finding a solution to this sizing problem.
For a lark, I popped in to a couple local shops to search for an old R/Shox crown/steerer that might work, to them be sent over to a local Marzzocci Fork shop just up the road. The nice young gentleman there took pity on my plight, and suggested that it might (stress ‘might’) be possible to find someone who could press out the old steel tube, and press in a new one. He said that they couldn’t do it, because the unit was too old (apparently risk issues), but he did produce a brand new, 1” un-cut steel steering tube that he let me have for a few bucks. I bought the tube, thinking that at least it was a half step closer to finding a solution, and so I now have a crown with a 1” steel steerer (for a set of rock Shox Mag 20’s) which I wanted to use, and a crown for a set of Mag 21 SL-Ti’s with a 1 and 1/8” aluminum (un-threaded) 182 mm long steering tube on hand (which crown I would trade) … plus a new, 1” un-cut/un-threaded steel steering tube.
For the experts – is it actually possible, given the right talent and machinery, to press out the old steel tube, and press in the new one I bought … or was the kid stringing me a line of malarkey?
Also: if anyone out there has a Rock Shox Crown (or even whole fork) with a threaded, 1” steel steerer in at least 187 to 190 mm in length … I would sure be willing to either trade some of what I have on hand, or purchase them outright. The assembly/build of my Romax is now stalled, until I can remedy the too short steering tube problem. And as beautiful as my Toxic Harald painted frame may look sitting on the floor of my living room, I would much rather it becomes a fully constructed work of ridable vintage art (it will be my sunny day run-about).
Any and all help and advice or suggestions are welcomed, and thank you in advance …
