True, they were, but not by much.

Platz was probably better than most probably give him credit for, at squats (you'd probably think that was a natural expectation) - I don't mean true 1RM lifts, but he managed some spectacular rep counts with serious weight.

Like many bodybuilders of that era, and slightly later, though, injury and tears seriously affected his career (in his case, though, not in his legs - in fact, most seem upper body, pec / bicep) - I've read comments, in recent times that certain popular steriods of the time (nandrolene / deca durabolin), were suspected of causing connective tissue issues, quite possibly accounting for maybe a disproportionate amount of bodybuilders of that time, effectively having their careers cut short because of muscle tears.

He did stand out today, the dude is packing some beef!

The side shots of his hams were unreal...I thought he was going to be powerful but he only came into that on his splash and dash on the last race to claim that bronze.

Tom platz legs were and still are considered a freak of bodybuilding, he used to train all day long, often full leg days then finish off with a 50 mile cycle ride to calm down!

Curt Harnett had 34" thighs. That was before they got really good at doping, too.
