Hi folks,

Built up some wheels a while ago. NOS Mavic rims, Coda hubs in 28 hole drilling for mtb use.

However, there was a problem. Once I realised the rear was 130 oln!

Soddit!

So, having started another project, I thought about those wheels, and if I could do something to change the axle. After some tapping with a hammer, filing and cutting, I had it out.

Excellent! 8)

Tapped the bearings back in with a socket,

Before fitting a conventional axle,

Now ready to fit,

It went straight in the drop outs! Handsome! 8)

The end.

Re:

How did you resolve the fact that the larger diameter of centre of original axle acts like a spacer between the inner races of bearings with the end caps/spacers bearing against inner race to prevent side load on bearings? Just saying as you seem to have used the threaded axles nuts to hold it all together as well as give the correct OLN size. Ever adjusted a cup and cone hub off the bike and then fitted it, tightened the quick release to find that bearings are a bit tight?
Is the threaded axle a tight fit inside inner races? Threads might flatten and the axle will be loose.

Just my mechanical curiosity. 8)

Re:

I understand your concerns OCP, I had a few myself. I locked two nuts together inside the bearings at the same spacing as the originals, to hopefully apply some stiffness to avoid the wear you mention. The inside of the bearing is actually pretty snug with the axle. No movement in the wheel when in the frame. We shall see how it works out. I've kept the old one, just in case I get another made.

Re:

Right, that's OK, would probably have done the same if I'd needed to replicate the original axle's function.
