Bear in mind that the supereight was only made for a year, as unfortunately, despite the eyewatering (for the time) price tag (which according to the Bank of England calculator is £620 in today's money), the supereight wasn't reliable. The pawls are very wear prone, as is the ratchet ring. The ratchet ring can't be removed, and it also traps the drive side hub shell bearing in place, you can't replace it. This is a shame as the freehub contact seal didn't do a great job in keeping the grime out of the ratchet. It was too-quick to market. There are also no spares available.

The SuperDuperEight addressed these issues with twice as many teeth on the ratchet and a design that was easy to strip and overhaul (no specific tools, no shims). The driveside bearing was much larger, AND you can press it out through the ratchet ring. The axle is also much larger and stiffer. All spares are available

I have a first-batch SuperDuperEight in service on my most regular rider, and it's about to have it's 30th birthday, on the original bearings.
