Rim tape width for Mavic 217?

Re:

For the record a XC717 '04 when they where released has a rim tape recommendation of 559 (etrto diameter) x 18 (width) x 0.6 (thickness) as specified by Mavic.

Basically a mm wider than its etrto as it bends into the spoke dip bit, the x21 use 23mm tapes, iirc, etc.

Tapes should be listed as 18-559 or 18/559 tapes if bought as a complete ring.

Re:

Now that's what I call marginal...

If you want to save weight, cut small squares approx 20 x 20 mm, from cloth based (non stretchy) duck tape and stick over spoke holes.

Ive done it to one wheel about 2-3 years and it hasnt failed yet..... admitedly ive only used that bike a handful of times

I always use 3 layers of transparent tesa tape on all my bikes.
Up to 4.5bar on my 28" dayly commuter. 4000+ km per year. No problems ever.
Saves weight and money. ;)

Re:

Its a very cheap although time consuming way to loose about 10g off the rotating mass. Mend a couple of punctures and its all undone.:(

TBH not worth the bother but i had some free time and was curious if it would work.

Btw you cam buy rubber bungs thet fit the rim drillings, simikar principke but more ££££

Re:

Stop thy faffing – just measure up and buy the correct width of rim tape and get it wrapped round that wheel – a couple of quid and few grams isn't a big deal in the scheme of things

Re:

Can't believe be i'm the first person to say they use insulating tape. 3 or 4 times round the wheel is sufficient. No idea what that weighs. Never moves. Come on, I can't be alone in this?

Jonboy, you're not alone.

I use electrical tape too, and like you, 3 times 'round, overlapping 2" each side of the valve hole. Trim the valve hole with a sharp knife, and it lasts till I next need to reach a spoke nipple head-side....

Why? Because I always have some on hand, and it doesn't get in the way at tube-time like the stock rubber strip does (the valve hole stretches over time, making re-inserting the valve take precious seconds longer). I've got 4 MTB's and one roadie (5 wraps) running this way, and none have ever suffered a failure in the tape. One one wheel, it lasted over 10 years.

I've never felt any need to use anything else.
