i now am the proud owner of two retro KONA frames!!!!!

One is a 93 Kilauea

the other is a 91 Explosif!

you are saying "cool...good for you" right? my question is:

Do i have two of the same frame???? sans the change in braze-ons here and there and the obvious frame size difference, are these the same frame? thanks in advance!

Well they both have Tange Prestige Concept mainframes, and I don’t think Tange changed Concept during its production lifetime, but there are a few differences. The most important of which of course is that only one of them has Explosif decals. Let’s face it, it is quite a good name for a bike.

Explosifs were usually made to a slightly higher specification than Kilaueas. For example the 93 Kilauea had the same stays as the Cinder Cone, whereas the Explosif had Concept stays (and your 91 Explosif may have Concept stays as well, but I don’t know). On the other hand, they improved the designs over the years, e.g., 1992 was the first year they said the Project Two was triple-butted, so I’d guess (I’ve never ridden a 91 Kona) that the 91 P2 may be slightly less sophisticated. So a 93 Kilauea could be pretty much equivalent in quality to a 91 Explosif overall.

The geometry was quite different between those two years. The 93 frames were smaller, with shorter top tubes and head tubes, as they began to accommodate the changes needed to suit the first suspension forks. 1993 was the transition year towards 1994, which established Kona hardtail geometry. They have never changed the geometry since 1994, which I think was the geometry that Joe Murray left them. Maybe one day they’ll get over him leaving them, but not quite yet you might think.

thanks Anthony! yeah i was just sitting in my living room looking at the Explosif and the Kilauea and realized that they were very similar. so i checked the catalog archives here and it looked like they were constructed out of the same tube set. doesn't matter the Explosif has a REALLY cool sticker on it that says "EXPLOSIF" which the Kilauea doesn't have. Maye if i re-paint it i will put a "Kilauea" sticker on the Explosif so people will think they can beat me in a race, but i will know that i am sitting on an explosif and waste them!!!! maybe that deserves a thread. "Sleepers" good bikes purposely mislabeled...i digress. so if i want the best of both worlds i should be looking to get a 94 explosif??? best geometry/best tubes.?

Well I'm glad you've got those friends in the living room with you there, Doc. Sounds like you don't put up with any nonsense from the unfairer sex. They have some strange ideas about living rooms, women, IMPE.

So you don't really have to justify having two similar bikes either. I guess they didn't really cost you much, when you tot up what you spend on everything else. And anyway, they have different personalities, if one is a stealthy no-decals single speeder, and the other is an up front retro classic. As long as there are different times when each would come into its own, why have only one?

But they're both from the age of rigid. The 1994 Explosif was the last of the classic Tange Explosifs, and the first with geometry designed for suspension, so yes that could be the one to go for when it's outright retro performance you need. But I think the rigid retros still make excellent bikes for commuting with a bit of off-road thrown in.

Sounds to me like maybe you need more than two actually.

yeah i should call them the "Roomies". Luckily me and my GF have separate apartments so she can't bitch too much about them hanging out in the Living room. There is this all original 1995 (i think) white Kilauea on the ride to work that is always locked up outside. i have left notes telling them that i want to buy it but no calls... i hate seeing it sit out in the rain, bastards.... I can see why some have so many KONAs. they are kinda addictive. got to get me one of those hots and a later explosif and..... we will see. thanks mate!
